2022 Sustainability Update

Written by Ella Blake | Jan 18, 2023 2:13:00 AM

In December, 2020, we committed to working towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.  Being the beginning of 2022, we figured now is a good time to take a look at how things have been going and what our goals look like one year down the track.

At Altitude, we have always placed a high importance on creating solutions that not only make life easier for people in accommodation, but also solutions that reduce the overall impact each property and Altitude have on the environment.  There is no point in providing solutions which hinder another business’ own efforts in reducing their environmental impact.  With that said, let’s recap what has happened over the past year.

Carbon Neutral with Dodo

Our work with Dodo has helped us to track and maintain our status as a carbon neutral company by offsetting emissions through two key international projects.  These projects prevent carbon from entering the atmosphere. You can view our Dodo page here.

We started our sustainability journey in December 2020, since then we have captured 122.5 tonnes of CO₂. That’s enough to cover one of these:

Awareness and Minimising Resource Consumption

With the development of our resource ROI calculator, the Altitude team have begun including resource savings when working with operators to find the best solution for their property.  An example of this is the use of paper.

Going digital means no paper and the sooner we are able to support properties moving towards a paperless future, the better.

Our dynamic ROI calculator now demonstrates examples to help decision making in reducing environmental impact.  A perfect example is a property using approximately 100 pages of paper for arrivals and departures (not including any back of house printing).  This property can save approximately 438kgs of wood from our forests each year, roughly 73 reams of paper, approximately NZD$520.00 spent in paper alone for just arriving and departing guests.

It may not seem like a drastic cost to some, but considering the amount of paper-using accommodation providers in the world, it’s strikingly significant.  Digital solutions offer approximately 80% reduction in overall ongoing costs, as well as reduce back of house printing too, it’s a no-brainer.

Going Forward

As we move into 2022, our goals remain the same, to maintain a carbon neutral company, which then evolves to become carbon positive.  When possible, our team will be back out in the community working on local initiatives in the great outdoors.

Naturally, our team are completely digital, and happily best friends with their laptops.  As stated in our December 2020 blog, company-wide, we work to reduce our individual resource consumption wherever possible.
